RDM entrepreneur, Jules Dock, is working in the Innovation Dock on an innovative concept for the offshore wind-energy industry: a tower which is 50% lighter than existing towers. By making the tower lighter, the installation of offshore windturbines will be made easier. Using a composite, a fibre-reinforced synthetic material, it is possible to build a structure that is extremely strong and nevertheless lighter than, for instance, steel. The first scale models were built at the end of 2017. Jules Dock won the Offshore Wind Innovation Award in December 2017 for these results, an encouragement prize for ground-breaking concepts that have made a contribution to and have had an impact on the future of offshore wind energy.
