On 1 October, Richard Hardiman set up his company at RDM Rotterdam—the excellent result of a startup that found its way to Rotterdam through PortXL. RanMarine is the company behind the innovative Waste Shark, which will contribute to cleaning up the ‘plastic soup’ drifting in the world’s oceans.
“We have started to produce and built our Waste Sharks now for India, Dubai, America and Cape Town, so we truly are using Innovation Dock and RDM as a base to go global,” according to Richard Hardiman of RanMarine Technology.
From South Africa to Rotterdam
Richard Hardiman, an entrepreneur from South Africa, saw boys on a boat in the habour fishing plastic out of the water with a fishing net. He thought it should be able to do that much quicker, more intelligently and more efficiently! Inspired by this, he developed a concept which involved fishing plastic out of the water using a drone. He did not make much headway in South Africa, but fortunately he received a call from PortXL in 2015. In 2016 het went through the PortXL programme and made contact with startups and facilities at RDM through the Rotterdam Port Authority’s network. He also concluded a contract with Port of Rotterdam Authority for the further development of his prototype. Genuin Engineering, RDM Makerspace and Jules Dock, startups at RDM, are helping him by making his prototypes and products. With the facilities provided by Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, he was able (and is still able) to test and improve his prototypes in the Aqualab and the DronePort.
In need of inspiring office space > RDM Flex Office
In addition to developing the prototype, Richard Hardiman was also in need of inspiring office space. The former Medical Services buildiing was recently rechristened RDM Flexkantoor. We were able to offer him an office unit for one year from 1 October. This is ideal for Richard Hardiman as it also enables him to carry out office activities in the vicinity of RDM’s prototype and test facilities. We wish to welcome him warmly and hope that more innovative companies will be attracted to the (Port of) Rotterdam by this.
