Most companies don’t have the room or budget to install their own industrial robotic arm, 3D metal printer, hydraulics lab or energy-neutral concept home. That’s why RDM Rotterdam, in partnership with RDM Makerspace and RDM Centre of Expertise, has made a variety of modern and hi-tech equipment available to outside parties for both short- and long-term projects.
The three robotic arms in the RDM Robotics Zone can be used to test and produce new and innovative products. Working in consultation with the facility’s specialist robotics staff, users can program the robotic arms to fabricate their designs. The Robotics Zone is an initiative of RDM Makerspace and IRS Robotics.
The Internet of Things (IoT) Lab gives access to all sorts of equipment that can be used to prototype IoT solutions. Examples include a PCB etching machine, soldering equipment and littleBits, Arduino and SparkFun components. These facilities can be used to develop new and innovative IoT solutions. The IoT Academy is an initiative of RDM Makerspace and KPN.
Aqua Dock is a testing facility for buoyant structures at RDM’s Dokhaven. Here, researchers can develop and test floating prototypes for new buildings and infrastructure. Aqua Dock consists of a floating pontoon that provides access to various experimental plots out on the water.
At the Aqualab hydrodynamic laboratory, researchers can study the effects water movements and currents have on hydraulic engineering projects, ships and coastlines. They can also conduct stability tests on buoyant objects.
Concept House Village is a unique user orientated testing environment for sustainable building practices, living and sustainable area development. It is a Living Lab where innovative houses, products and systems are tested with and by occupants. The occupant is key in designing, the development and using the house.
At RDM Makerspace, creative Rotterdam residents, self-employed entrepreneurs and start-ups can find a wide selection of machinery and hardware that can be used to realise their designs. In the centre’s spacious and dynamic workshop, members have access to equipment like CNC milling machines, laser cutters, 3D printers and scanners and robotic arms.
