Wind meets tech: innovation in action at RDM

We’ve recently installed a brand-new wind turbine on our dock!

In an exciting collaboration between Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and the Rotterdam-based Montreal Solutions, this turbine is becoming a smart energy powerhouse. High-tech sensors monitor all its performance metrics in real-time - from rotation speed to energy output. The data is transmitted via 4G to a dashboard where experts can fine-tune it for maximum efficiency.

This project perfectly embodies what RDM stands for: putting sustainable innovation into practice. And the best part? Students are at the heart of this energy transition.

Together, we’re building a greener future, right here on the RDM quay.

New door in the Shipbuilding Warehouse

The old, monumental door in the Shipbuilding Warehouse has given way to a brand new, modern one.

Where it used to take a few days to remove the mechanical parts of the door, the new doors can now be opened within minutes. With the new door installed, De Haas has moved into the building, now neighbouring Franklin Offshore. The building now meets all modern standards.

Part of the old door is still at the Shipbuilding Shed and will be reused as artwork.

Collaboration Technical College and OceansX

Earlier this month, Marc Meijer (Technical College Rotterdam) and Berend van de Kraats (OceansX) signed a sustainable partnership

OceansX is developing a barge (push barges, floating pontoons) that purifies large quantities of water on-site. Using existing technology, salt water is converted into drinking water. The roaming barge temporarily provides extra clean water to disaster areas, such as after a typhoon or earthquake.

Over the next 10 years, students from Rotterdam Technical College will be contributing to this development. Currently, there is a test setup at the waterfront at RDM. Students from the Process Technology and Maintenance program will maintain this container and help further optimize it.

Berend: “Within the project, everyone has their own role and ambition, which allows everyone to contribute their expertise. Additionally, we think it’s important to involve vocational students in our mission. There is so much passion and knowledge there, and we need that now.”

Tom, a third-year Process Operator C student: “We have already looked at the test setup, and it looked cool. We are already familiar with some components, such as a generator and solar panels. We can now apply what we learn in our studies to this test setup. So, you are directly part of a very large project. It’s great to join in the thinking process and help develop it.” The intention is also to involve students from the Engineering Technician program.
